The Ethiopian Capital Market Authority (ECMA) has issued the country's first individual securities investment advisor license, marking a major step forward in developing Ethiopia's capital markets.
The license was granted to Habtamu Eshetu under ECMA Directive No. 980/2024 governing the licensing and supervision of capital market service providers.
Habtamu holds a Master's degree in Business Administration from Addis Ababa University and has over 25 years of experience in fields such as teaching, research, and business consulting. He has also run his own management consulting firm for 11 years.
In addition to his academic credentials, Habtamu possesses certifications in financial markets and professional management. He has previously advised both public and private sector entities on accessing financing from banks.
Speaking about the milestone, ECMA Director General Brook Taye (PhD) said issuing the license to Habtamu demonstrates their commitment to building a robust capital market in Ethiopia. "We aim to provide investors with reliable and knowledgeable professionals," Brook added.
The ECMA is encouraging other qualified professionals to enter the market and help develop Ethiopia's capital markets.
This first license issuance marks an important step for Ethiopia's nascent but growing capital markets. It paves the way for additional talent to serve the financial advisory needs of investors.
During March this year, Global consultancy and audit firm Deloitte has received the first securities investment advisor license issued by the Ethiopian Capital Market Authority (ECMA).
