- Tech Giant's Move Set to Boost Country's Digital Economy
Google Play has started accepting registrations from Ethiopian developers, a move that is expected to give a significant boost to the country's digital economy.
The move means that Ethiopian developers can now publish their apps directly on Google Play, the world's largest digital platform, and showcase their innovative ideas to a global audience.
'A GREAT MILESTONE'
Belete Molla, Minister of Innovation and Technology, hailed the move as "a great milestone" in building a strong digital economy.
Solomon Kassa, a renowned IT expert and host of the popular TV show TechTalk, agreed, saying it would have a profound impact on the country's tech industry.
"This means that our talented developers can directly publish apps on Google Play, bringing their innovative ideas to the world," he said.
A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITY
With over 3.3 million Android apps available on the Google Play Store worldwide, this move is expected to open up a world of opportunities for Ethiopian developers.
As the default app hub on supporting Android devices, the Google Play Store reaches a vast user base, with the operating system dominating over 70 percent of the global market.
INDIA LEADS THE WAY
In terms of app downloads on Google Play, India has taken the top spot in the first half of 2024, with millions of Indians downloading apps on a daily basis. This is largely due to India's massive population, rapid smartphone adoption, and increasing internet penetration.
Ethiopia is also believed to have great potential in terms of digital adoption, with almost 30 million internet users and over 70 million subscribers to telecom services. Additionally, smartphone adoption has surpassed 20 million, creating a sizable market for Google Play.
