Ethiopia plans to secure one billion dollars from coffee as a drought-hit Brazil faces a fall in production, causing the cost of arabica coffee beans to hit its highest level since 2016.
Over 900 million dollars of coffee was exported in the last fiscal year. Though the volume saw a slight decline, the proceed earned from the cash crop showed a 25 million dollars increase from 2019/20.
In June 2021, the country exported a historic-high amount of coffee, reaching 150 million dollars, the highest monthly increase recorded to date.
Coffee is Ethiopia's top export item, ahead of gold, khat and oilseeds.
