Ethiopia wheat production for marketing year 2021/22 is estimated at 4.8 million metric tons, down 300,000 tons (six percent) from last year, according to the forecast of United State Department for Agriculture.
Yield is estimated at 2.74 metric tons per hectare, down 1 percent from last year and down 1 percent from the 5-year average, the department estimated.
Even though seasonal rains were favorable this year, a below-average harvest is expected due to falling cropping activities caused by civil unrest in northern Ethiopia.
The Tigray region produces approximately five percent of the country’s wheat output, while war-affected areas of Amhara region produce half of this, undermining the government's efforts to substitute wheat imports this year.
For this year, the government has planned to irrigate wheat over 400,000 hectares of land.
