The Petroleum and Energy Authority has drafted a new directive outlining plans to leverage existing fueling station facilities for electric vehicle charging infrastructure development.
The draft policy details specifications, permitting processes, and pricing models to establish EV charging stations. In discussions with fuel distributors, Authority Director General Sahrela Abdullahi said growing electric vehicle imports require widespread public access to charging.
"As electric mobility increases, charging stations are needed for public use," Sahrela said. "Leveraging currently operating facilities can help expand the network more rapidly," she added.
Ahmed Saeed, Deputy Director General of Energy, briefed separate fuel station operators on the directive drafting process.
"We looked to other countries' experiences and developed this directive as a guideline for permitting infrastructure construction," Ahmed explained.
Participants provided input on incentives, reliable power supply, coordinating stakeholders, and key implementation factors. The Authority will finalize the directive after broader industry consultations to streamline EV charging rollout across fuel stations.
