Ethiopia will stop importing wheat beginning from next year, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said. It is a part of his initiative to fully substitute the cash crop locally.
The country spends over half a billion dollars on imports of wheat annually, despite being the largest producer of wheat in Africa.
Last year, an estimated five millions tonnes of wheat was produced, accounting for 75 percent of the demand while the rest was satisfied by imports.
Abiy said either "we will farm or die. "We won't import wheat," said the Premier, while visiting a large wheat farm cultivated through cluster farming in Amhara Region.
