Hospitality establishments in Addis Ababa and regional towns report an increase in room occupancy rates as they slightly recover from the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic, which brought the tourism sector to a standstill.
Currently, the occupancy rate of hotels in the capital, excluding those shut down by authorities, spans between 30 percent and 40 percent. It is a drastic improvement from the two percent occupancy rate registered by the hotels a month after COVID-19 came to the picture.
The news came as the country embark on its tourist peak season, running between September and December. Last year's peak season brought a disappointing outcome because of a drastic fall in leisure tourists from Europe and North America.
