U.S. hotel group Marriott International plans to open nine new properties across Ethiopia, ramping up its presence in the East African country where it already operates two hotels in the capital Addis Ababa.
Marriott President and CEO Anthony Capuano met with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) last week, outlining proposals to significantly expand the company's Ethiopian portfolio.
With over 26 years operating in the market, Marriott has established itself in Addis Ababa through the Sheraton Addis, a Luxury Collection Hotel, and Marriott Executive Apartments - both located in the capital and totaling more than 400 rooms.
As part of the expansion, Marriott aims to open new hotels in Addis Ababa, Bahir Dar, Hawassa, Jimma and Mekelle, which Capuano said would create hundreds of local jobs and support tourism growth.
"Ethiopia stands out as a premier destination with its rich culture, heritage, natural landscapes, diverse travel experiences, and genuine hospitality. We want more international guests experience Ethiopia’s unique natural beauty, supporting local economies and employment opportunities.," Capuano said.
Marriott has invested in “community initiatives” during its years operating in Ethiopia. The new development phase cements its long-term commitment to the East African country's hospitality sector, according to Capuano.
The additional hotels are “expected to play a pivotal role in fueling economic growth, supporting local employment, and attracting travellers to the region," Capuano added.
