Molla Zegeye, one of Ethiopia's most renowned lawyers, has passed away at the age of 71.
Molla died on March 07, 2024 in Addis Ababa. He had been battling the illness for an extended period and despite treatment, his health deteriorated.
He had a long and distinguished legal career spanning over four decades.
The Ethiopian Federal Bar Association has released a statement expressing deep condolences to Molla's family, friends and the entire legal community in the country.
Molla started his career in the military during the reign of Emperor Haile Selassie. He later transitioned to politics and public service. For the past 30 years, Molla served as a private lawyer, legal consultant and defender of civil liberties.
He was known for bravely defending the rights of journalists and media professionals during the rule of the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF).
Molla also frequently represented controversial business figures and stood up to powerful interests.
Molla is survived by his wife and three children.
