The Ethiopian Fuel & Energy Authority is getting tough on gas stations flouting the rules around fuel distribution.
In a significant enforcement action, the agency last week sanctioned 97 fuel retailers in the capital and nearby areas. Forty stations were hit with one-month suspensions, while 57 others received written warnings.Â
The penalties stem from an inspection covering September 21-October 22, which found the stations selling fuel outside the mandated electronic system or distributing more product than their quotas.
Specifically, banned sellers exceeded the allotted amounts, an agency report revealed. Warnings went to retailers completing just 50-80% of sales via the required digital platform.
The agency has administered a computerized fuel allocation and tracking process since July 8, 2023 in Addis and surrounding cities. The goal is curbing illicit fuel trading plaguing the region.
